Members needed for North Yorks access group

October 30, 2011 by admin Leave a Comment

New members are needed for a group that provides guidance and advice on ways to improve and manage public access and opportunities for open-air recreation in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

There are currently eight vacancies on the independent Yorkshire Dales Access Forum and application forms need to be submitted by December 2.

Meghann Hull, the Access Development Officer for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA), said: “The Forum has the job of working with individuals and organisations that use the 680 square miles of the National Park for leisure and enjoyment, and advising on ways to improve their visits to this special place.

“This can be anything from suggesting the upgrade of a specific footpath to looking at mobility issues. The members also take part in consultation on a range of documents and strategies issued at local and national level.”

Current members represent interests ranging from land management and agriculture to local business and outdoor recreation.

The Forum meets three times a year, although members also sit on a variety of advisory groups that meet more frequently.

Malcolm Petyt, the YDNPA Member Champion for Recreation Management, said: “Access Forums were set up to improve access in the countryside and to help avoid conflict between those who own and work the land and those who use it for recreation.

“So it is important that the Forum has people with a range of interests.”

Anyone who would like to join, should contact Meghann Hull on 01969 652363 or email her a meghann.hull@yorkshiredales.org.uk.

Members of the Ragged Robin Conservation Group of volunteers used 30 tonnes of stone to build a 40-metre-long wall to protect the coast-to-coast path.

The work was done in conjunction with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

Ian Broadwith, Area Ranger for Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, said: “We were in imminent danger of losing the footpath to erosion by the river.”

Paths in this part of the dale provide excellent walks along both banks of the River Swale.

The work has also helped to protect the historic stone pitching on this section of riverbank. This provides a solid surface leading down to the river’s edge.

Peter Newman, a trustee of the Open Spaces Society and one of its Herefordshire representatives, invented the scheme and has led it for the past 20 years.

The project is operated in conjunction with the Open Spaces Society, Herefordshire Council and the Hereford Probation Service.

Mr Newman said: “Over the last 20 years, with the help of offenders on community payback, we have erected about 600 footpath and bridleway signs and 130 waymark posts. We have also installed 600 stiles, 18 footbridges and created 35 ditch crossings. ”

The project also maintains many miles of paths and has cleared overgrown stiles.

Included in the general tasks done by work teams are parts of the Offa’s Dyke and Mortimer Trail.

Mr Newman adds: “It is impossible to say how much money we have saved the local authorities’ path-maintenance budgets over the 20 years, but it must be many thousands of pounds. “
