A new walking and cycling bridge over the busy A10 in Hertfordshire has now opened.
The Paul Cully bridge, is named after the late council officer who was a driving force behind the scheme.
Spanning the busy A10 dual carriageway in Cheshunt, the new link should prove a valuable link between communities separated by the road.
The opening was attended by local councillors, Sustrans’ Regional Director and representatives of The Big Lottery Fund, who part funding the scheme.
Nigel Brigham, East of England Regional Director for Sustrans, commented, “This bridge is going to be a fantastic asset for the local community, making it so much easier to get across the A10.”
Leader of Broxbourne Council, Councillor Paul Mason commented, “Paul gave this Council 40 years of loyal dedicated service. He was a most amiable person who was universally respected and showed outstanding commitment above the call of duty. One of his finest achievements is the bridge over the A10. Sadly, Paul never lived to see the first child use this bridge.”
The bridge has been developed by Broxbourne Borough Council in conjunction with Sustrans.
The scheme is being funded in part from a £50million grant to Sustrans from the Big Lottery Fund for the Connect2 project, which is developing new walking and cycling routes across the UK.
School and community links
The new Paul Cully Bridge will provide a safe route across the A10 for children travelling to St Mary’s School and for those travelling between Bury Green, Waltham Cross and Cheshunt.
As part of the Council’s Waltham Cross renaissance programme, it will also link with the public right of way network, the Lee Valley Regional Park and other key amenities, such as railway stations and town centres.
