Learn more about the history of the North Pennines by taking part in two walks taking place in July 2011.
The Secrets of Bollihope -Tuesday 19 July. 2-5pm.
Archaeological digs led by Rob Young of English Heritage over recent years have uncovered evidence of human settlement at Bollihope, County Durham extending back to the Stone Age.
The walk will visit excavations in progress and examine the most recent finds.
This two-mile (3km) moderate grade walk (some hills, stiles and muddy paths – boots advisable) starts at the informal car park on the SW side of the B6278 opposite the disused quarry; outdoor clothing is advised, no dogs allowed.

Roman Across the Hills – Saturday 23 July. 2pm – 6pm
Walkers go Roman across the hills at the little-known but spectacularly preserved Roman fort of Whitley Castle near Alston in Cumbria, now the focus of an English Heritage project.
From 2pm – 6pm, the guided walk will visit the fort and several other sites to present the story of Alston Moor from prehistory to the present day.
Three miles (5km) of moderate grade walking (typically some hills, stiles and muddy paths – outdoor clothing and boots advised). No dogs allowed.
